Picture an LDS meetinghouse in your head, and what do you see? Probably this:
And not this:
It is true that the vast majority of meetinghouses in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have been built from 1970 to the present, after standard plans had largely taken hold. These standard plans allow for little variety or architectural ornamentation such as stained glass, woodwork, particular architectural styles or local touches. Unfortunately, this has also largely carried over into international settings, where meetinghouses appear large and American (something I never noticed until my mission).
However, a great architectural heritage can be found in meetinghouses across the Mormon corridor and even in a few other surprising places. This blog's main work and the vast majority of its posts seek to find, document, and share these buildings with others. Below is a full list (as of mid-2022) of all of the buildings I have documented. If you want an up-to-date list, I suggest going to the blog's main URL (ldspioneerarchitecture.blogspot.com) on your computer, or selecting the web version on your phone, to find a list of all of the tags of buildings on the right-hand side.

My hope is that next time you picture an LDS meetinghouse in your head, you'll have a different image come to mind!
There seems to be some confusion on what you are calling the murray 1st ward. The building on vine street is actually the murray 2nd ward and was built after the 1st ward building located at 50 East Main Street in Murray was organized on Dec 16 1900. And then used starting in 1906. I attendened this church as a child and it was torn down roughly 20 years ago. I have had difficulty finding any pictures of it. Was really hoping you would have a picture of it to no avail. I was able to turn up one photo from 1946. This was also known as the Grant Ward. Hoping you can find more photos than i did!
ReplyDeleteThis is a great resource. Thank you.
I was wondering if you know of any church buildings that have cultural halls without basketball courts? I loved the slc 27th ward. Do you know any others?
