But there are many more tabernacles outside of Salt Lake City. A stake tabernacle acted as a stake center, which meant they had to be larger (and as a result, usually more ornate) than your typical ward meetinghouse to accommodate more people. This ultimately meant that tabernacles tended to bridge the architectural gap between temples (the Church's best architectural efforts) and meetinghouses (which tended to be more plain).
