River Heights Ward

River Heights, tucked into the southeast corner of Logan, has a chapel that was built in 1914. Its main distinction is the beautiful details on the south end.

While the building still stands, and is in fair condition, it looks like it's being used as a warehouse for the Utah Festival Opera foundation. At least, it looks like a warehouse when I peeked in:

It looks like it was sold at least a couple of decades ago, maybe longer, based on its condition.

  1. I grew up in River Heights, as did my mother. My grandparents moved to River Heights in the early 60's and attended this chapel for many years. This chapel was used until the late 1970's when a new Stake Center was built at 800 South and 600 East. This chapel initially housed just the River Heights Ward, but at the end of it's use, River Heights was split into two wards. There are now four. It was originally sold to the Cache County School District and was used for various purposes over the years, including as an overflow for the elementary school next door (also now closed and relocated to a newer building). The City owns it now and leases to the Utah Festival Opera Company. They store props there. There are also some living quarters used by performers during the summer. -Tom Grover

  2. I just came across this website and had a couple of things to add. The original 1914 chapel was destroyed in a fire in 1932 and the one you are seeing here was built on the same site and dedicated on April 22, 1934. There is a photograph in the book "The History of River Height, Utah", published by the River Heights Civic Club (1988), showing President Heber J. Grant standing with others on the circular steps at the entrance of the building during the dedication. The Utah Festival Opera Company no longer leases the building and it has been subjected to major vandalism in recent years. It is scheduled to be demolished in early 2024. One clarification, River Heights is not part of Logan City but is an entirely separate city. - Dale Nielson
