This chapel was built in the late 1930s, with the chapel being completed in 1942. David O. McKay dedicated the building in 1945.

The building is a wonderful example of the modern style, with some striking art deco elements. It has a plaster finish to give it a clean, white appearance.
The building has had some additions over the years, obscuring some of the chapel windows, but much of the details on the exterior remain.
This is one of my favorite buildings in Idaho Falls. the first time I saw it, I had to take a double-take because it doesn't look like your traditional LDS building.
ReplyDeleteThere is one similar in Las Vegas, NV
ReplyDeleteThis was my chapel growing up... And it is special. It was fitted with a pray room to serve till a temple was built... It isn't open to the public like some other places. It has a stair case up to it but it has been closed off, but I think the stairs are still intact, just move the wall... Now the only way to access the little room is by a ladder that starts well above head level on the stage that leads to a little door... But you can still see signs of the stair case if you go on the left hand side, looking at the stage from the chapel, stage stairs. I love this chapel... Though most of use primary kids thought the basement was creepy and we would dare each other to brave the hallway that went though the lower levels.
ReplyDeleteThat's really cool to hear! If I ever get in the building I'll have to check it out.
