Hawthorne (SLC) Ward: Details

Notice the gold-leafing details at the front behind the pulpit:

This mural hangs near the rear of the chapel. It's Christ from Harry Anderson's The Second Coming...although he is flipped horizontally. This was likely a large print that was put up in the chapel many years later--Anderson didn't paint this until the early 1960s--and allowed to remain.

Hawthorne (SLC) Ward: Interior

This chapel has some nice features while maintaining the more modest colonial architecture of the 1920s. The ceiling is slightly barrelled, giving it a spacious feel. A detailed moulding pattern runs along the sides and front of the chapel, and gold leafing is used to give a nice finish at the front.

There is a painting in the chapel--a close-up of the Christ from Harry Anderson's The Second Coming. It's flipped horizontally which is odd...I'll show some more details in my next post.

The doors also have some nice geometric details above them.

Hawthorne (SLC) Ward

Built in 1925, the Hawthorne Ward was a later iteration of the twins plan--the chapel on one side, the cultural hall on the other, and then classrooms connecting the two.

This building is located near the southern end of Salt Lake City.

It still looks in good condition. It has leaded windows at the front of the chapel and main entrance, and nice details around the windows and gables.

It's still used as a meetinghouse--interior pictures will be coming soon.

Brigham City First Ward (original)

This was the original building of the Brigham City First Ward, built in 1884. A new chapel, built in 1905, replaced this one, and it was used as a school. When a new chapel was built in 1924, both of these buildings were vacated. The 1905 chapel was razed recently, but the original building still stands. It's probably the oldest religious structure in the valley.

The building looks much the same. It's now owned by the Brigham City Presbyterian Church.
